North Shore Hikers Club Welcomes You

The North Shore Hikers, started in 1958, is the biggest and most active hiking club based in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. With over 600 members, we come from all walks of life to share a love for the great outdoors.

We provide outdoor activities that are enjoyable, satisfying, scenic and safe. Through the club, members can enjoy fantastic wilderness in all seasons, improve fitness and develop outdoor skills.

We have an average of 7 weekend activities at various levels, with more in summer than winter. They include hiking, snowshoeing, cycling, back country skiing and backpacking. Trips are rarely cancelled, except due to heavy rain or poor trail condition. In addition to local mountains, areas visited include Whistler, Chilliwack Valley, Manning Park and Mt. Baker. Wednesday hikes run year round and are planned on a week-to-week basis. There are multi-day trips as far afield as the Rockies. Occasionally, members travel overseas together for adventures.

Our adult-oriented club has an excellent safety record due to the experience of members and ensuring participants are properly equipped. The club relies on volunteers but has used guides for avalanche training. Also, workshops are held on snowshoeing, snow camping and basic ice axe use.

Frequently, after a long hike, participants arrange to have dinner together. Annually, there are two slide shows and a General Meeting in the fall.

A quarterly Newsletter, called the Raven, is mailed to members. It contains the Schedule, updates on club business, interesting stories, an Executive contact list and general club information (some of which appears on this site). Naturally, members are most interested in the Schedule. For the public and prospective members, we post the current Schedule on this site, leaving out the Coordinator and Meeting details.

A Coordinator is in charge of each activity. Non-members and new members should contact the Coordinator to ensure the activity is suitable. As a rough guide for the easiest hikes, you should be able to hike on a good trail with moderate elevation gain for about 5 hours at a reasonable pace.
