Winter Travel Reminders

photo by Chris CowanIt gets dark early in the woods. Hikes may run out of daylight on short winter days, due to poor weather, poor judgment or emergencies!  A headlamp only weighs a few grams.  Make sure you have one and the batteries are good.

As well as rain/windproof gear you should have a toque, along with waterproof gloves and spare pair.  A plastic bag with spare pants and shirt is a necessity too.  A pair of mini crampons also weighs very little and can prove invaluable on those days when there is icy snow on the trail.  Pay attention to whatever extra gear is recommended (or mandated!) by the CD.  This may be poles, snowshoes, crampons, ice axe as the hike and conditions dictate.

As wel know, weather and conditions in the mountains are  changeable, so check the forum for hike updates.

For additional information, check the general gear requirements in the Raven.
