More website updates

News Subscription, Member List, Forum Improvements, and more...

Subscribe to News

The website home page has become a news page. Now you can subscribe to the NSH news and get an email message whenever a new news article is added. It is easy and open to everyone, not just members. Use the Subscribe panel on the home page. Full details in Help.

Member List

The new Member List is a directory of all website members and allows members to send email to each other. Members can add their telephone number to the list. The list can be sorted and searched, and it gives links to profiles and forum posts. It cannot be viewed by the public. To see the list, log in to the website and use the Members tab on the top menu. Use Profile (View/Update) on the Members tab to add your telephone number to the list. More information on the Help menu.

The Member List is convenient and flexible, better than the "shared list" for sharing your contact information with other members.

Update or Edit Your Profile

Website members can now edit their profile information: real name, user name, password, email address, telephone number and more. Use the Members tab in the menu. Only visible when logged in. More information on the Help menu.

Website Log-in With User Name or Email Address

To make it easier to log in, you can now use your email address instead of your user name. One less thing to remember.

Shared List

The shared list of email addresses an telephone numbers is in operation again. See the Documents page under the About the NSH menu tab. It may be a short-lived return as the Member List is easier and does more.

Simplified Forum with Real Names

Two forum categories have been removed (New Events and Spontaneous Hikes) as they caused confusion. New event announcements now go into Bike Trip Updates or Hike Updates.

Real names have replaced user names in the forum. (User names sometimes give no indication of the member's real name.)

Easier to use Schedule

The web schedule (same one that is in the Raven) is now easier to read. It presented as a normal web page (HTML rather than PDF). No need to download to view. It can even be read on a smart phone. The public version now has an introduction about joining a hike or ride as a guest and the public schedule now includes full details of upcoming slide shows.

older changes:

Better Menu and Organization

The top menu is now the way to navigate the website. The menu tabs across the top of every web page access everything on the site; no need to return to the home page for the menu.

The menu at the left on the home page remains, but is now a few "quick links" to frequently used pages.

To see the revised organization of the website, go to the top menu and select HELP>SITE MAP.

Better PDF Document Access

The website has many documents in PDF format. These files are difficult to read without first downloading the file and then opening it, a slow and awkward process. The site previously included a PDF viewer but it didn't work well in some web browsers.

Now there are two options for most PDF files on the website: View and Download. If you click View, the file opens in a new window in Google Documents Viewer. No need to download to read the document. If you need to print the document, for best results click Download, then print from the downloaded file. Note that all documents are stored on our NSH website, not on Google Docs. We only use Google Docs as a viewer.

RSS Feeds

These are now set up for the Home page and for pages in the forum. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is briefly explained in the Help pages.
